Metabolic Intelligence: Budget-Native Compute from Tag to Campus

Metabolic Intelligence (MEI) is a class of computer intelligence designed to run inside a fixed energy budget. This paper defines the class, reports emulator and datasheet results on a sensor tag, and reports a protocol-level test of a grid-following data center, each labeled by evidence class.

In plain words

  1. Give a computer a fixed energy budget, and design it to give the best answer it can inside that budget.
  2. A tiny sensor tag that checks food freshness can then run for about eight years on a coin battery.
  3. A data center can cut its power use when the electricity grid asks, by pausing or shrinking work, without giving wrong answers.
